English proficiency first and foremost

photo_04 At Keio Academy of New York, a whole day may pass without a single word of instruction in Japanese. In total between 50% – 70% of the classes are conducted in the English language. Passing the EIKEN Test in Practical English Proficiency is not a requirement, but it is strongly recommended that students can communicate at a level equivalent to EIKEN Grade 2 (High school graduate level). The importance of this is reflected in the Keio Academy of NY entrance examinations. The essay and interview parts are central in the examination, which is why the Ecole de l’Enfant Keio NY program devote much time to writing and and oral communications training.

Attitude and human qualities of central importance

Academic performance is but one of the aspects that are considered by the admissions office. Active participation in extracurricular activities, the degree to which a student learn and grow from those activities, and how this is reflected in his or her behavior, are also considered highly important. Participants in the Ecole de l’Enfant Keio NY Program are engaged in various activities that will enrich their personality. Participants are encouraged to think about what they learn from these experiences, and how it connects to their dreams for the future. We provide solid support to help them present these views to an audience.

Curriculum adapted to the individual’s needs

Based on the individual student’s English ability academic performance we put together a training program to support him or her all the way to the entrance examination test. Instruction does not consist of mere cramming, but aims at deepening the student’s interest in his or her studies, and to inspire the student to discover the joy of learning. We fine tune the curriculum to let the student enjoy a feeling of accomplishment.

Competent guidance to success

We provide instructors who have graduated from American universities to help bolster the student’s English essay writing and interview communication skills. Furthermore, students will consult with a special advisor with intricate knowledge of the Keio Academy of New York admission process, as well a former Keio Academy PTA officer. This staff has a practical understanding of the Keio Academy entrance examination. They also provide practical insights into the challenges and opportunities of student life. Advice and support is also available for parents.

Essay and Interview

Applicants to the Keio Academy of New York are evaluated with a holistic approach, weighing in any skill or quality that can be considered of value. For this reason, we work to help students discover strengths and abilities they may not be aware of themselves. We engage them in a dialog about what these skills and abilities may be, and how they can grow them to truly enjoy their academic life at the Keio NY Academy. We train them to express this in an engaging way in English.

Not found elsewhere! Post graduation support

A student used to the environment of junior high school in Japan may find life at the Keio Academy of NY challenging. Not only is about 60% of classes conducted in English, but student evaluation is based on a broad spectrum of factors, reaching far beyond academic performance. We train students for this new environment, taking a long term perspective of each student’s future. The entrance examination is just a start. We also provide English communication training to bolster presentation and discussion skills. Furthermore, students at the Keio Academy of New York are required to pass TOEFL English proficiency tests every academic year. For this reason we provide English instruction based on the TOEFL exams during summer holidays. A student may receive over 90 hours of instruction during this period.
