The school was founded in 1990 as a branch of Keio University, one of the most prestigious universities in Japan. It is a combined junior- and senior highschool. It is accredited both by the Japanese government and the State of New York, and Japanese as well as foreign students enroll in the school. There are entrance examinations for 9th and 10th graders, and Japanese students in 2nd grade of junior highschool to 1st grade of senior highschool are allowed to take the exam. Students live in dormitories, and about 60% of the classes are held in English. This means that students aquire a high level of English proficiency. Graduates can continue to study at Keio University without taking entrance exams en route. It is a recommended academic route for students wishing to enter Keio or an American university. It as possible for students at Japanese schools to take the entrance exams for Keio Academy of New York up to six times from second grade in junior high school, starting with the 9th grade AO exams (fall).

The Keio Academy of New York is an accredited senior high school recognised both in Japan and the U.S.A.
The Keio Academy of New York is accredited as a private senior highschool by The Board of Education in New York, as well as recognized by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as an “Overseas Educational Institution”. Its curriculum is organised according to the government guidelines of the US and Japan, and graduates from the senior highschool are accordingly recognised as such by both countries.
